Trailer Towing Safety Course

WHAT TYPE OF COURSE IS THIS?

CAE Safety's Trailer Towing Course is a combination of classroom and in-vehicle, hands-on training.

WHAT'S COVERED?

Below are some of the topics that are covered during the classroom workshop:

  •   Essential trailer towing equipment

    •   Proper hitching procedures

  •   Safe operation of the various trailer towing systems

  •   Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings

  •   Safe trailer towing skills, including:

    • Turns,

    • Speed control,

    • Safe following distances and stopping,

    • Backing & blind spots,

    • Various environmental and road conditions

    • Review of company vehicle policies (optional)


Below are some of the topics that are covered during the in-vehicle training:

  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection

  •  Participant to demonstrate proper trailer hook-up, including:

    • Brake control set-up and braking system test,

    • Break-away switch test,

    • Various hitch hook-ups, including proper safety chain connection

    • Connection and testing of electrical and lighting systems

  •  Participant to demonstrate various trailer towing skills discussed during the classroom portion of the training including backing, stopping and turning with a trailer.

  •  Instructor will also review braking techniques, speed control, and visual scanning patterns.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

This course is recommended for any employees who are required to tow a trailer during their work assignments.  It's also beneficial for summer students or individuals who intend to pull leisure trailers as well.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The classroom workshop portion is generally 1.5 - 2 hours in length.  This is followed by 1.5 hours of hands-on, in-vehicle training.
